Optimal Nutrition Pre-Calving

THE IMPORTANCE OF MINERALS AND VITAMINS IN PRE-CALVING NUTRITION
Milk and suckled calf producers that ignore the importance of the dry period do so at their peril. Nutritionally it is the most important period of the annual cycle because it influences not only fresh cow performance and health, but way beyond as well, including getting the cow back in calf.

Dry cow rations based on grazing, grass silage and straw will inevitably be low in trace elements and vitamins. Those based on maize and whole crop forages with straw will contain even less minerals and vitamins. Dry cow requirements for minerals and
vitamins have received a lot of research interest over the past 10 years or more and we can use the findings to help improve performance and reduce metabolic health issues.

OPTIMISE PERFORMANCE WITH DOWNLAND DRY COW LICKS:
The Downland Dry Cow buckets take advantage of such research within their specications and contain high levels of the crucial elements including magnesium, copper, selenium and vitamin E for example, often deficient in forages.
Providing dry cows with a properly balanced supplement to their forage should help optimise the calving process and minimise the number of cows requiring assistance to calve.

DOWNLAND DRY COW
• Feed from 6-8 weeks pre-calving, removing all other mineral supplements.
• Includes a high level of selenium, including selenium yeast, to help reduce the potential of retained cleansings and infections.
• A high level of copper is added, including chelated copper to help overcome the antagonistic effects of molybdenum, sulphur and iron, to optimise return to oestrus.
• Chelated zinc is included to help support feet and teat health and colostrum IgG content.
• Magnesium is included at 10% to assist with contraction strength at the point of calving.
• A high vitamin E level is added to optimise calf vigour and faster suckling plus support of the immune system to help fight infection.
• We recommend Downland Dry Cow buckets are fed free-access from 6-8 weeks pre-calving in a ratio of one bucket (25kg) per 10 cows or one tub (100kg) per 25 cows with ad lib grazing/forage.
